A 166,700-Neuron Connectome, Fully Mapped
On September 3, Google Research and HHMI's Janelia Research Campus released the complete wiring diagram of a male fruit fly's nervous system. The map counts over 166,000 neurons and 125 million synaptic connections, a record. A full decade of work sits behind it, published in Cell.
Will the fly learn to survive?
The 2024 female map stopped at roughly 139,000 neurons and covered the brain alone. This new connectome adds the ventral nerve cord, the fly's answer to a spinal cord. Researchers also spotted more than 100 cell types tied to one sex only.

By September 6, Coinbase engineer Alex Wormuth had plugged the MaleCNS v1.0 model into Doom, live on stream. Each game frame stimulates sensory neurons, and neural activity translates into controls.
Damage fires a pulse into two PPL101 dopamine cells, a reinforcement loop lifted straight from biology. Rewards for survival, punishment for mistakes: dopamine handles the rest. His research question, stated with full academic gravity: "Will the fly learn to survive?"

Developer Jessica Paquette wired the same data into Super Mario 64. The result: a plumber who jumps and slams into walls with impressive consistency. Obstacle avoidance apparently did not ship with this build.
Her GitHub code was, in her own words, "100% vibe coded with GPT Astra". Others dropped the full connectome into Minecraft as a mob, tried Beat Saber, and even coaxed YMCA poses out of it.
Fish and Mice Are Next in the Queue
Why care beyond the meme? Because these experiments run on the wiring of an actual brain, not an artificial network trained on scraped data. Nobody expects the fly to clear E1M1, but the sandbox is genuinely new.

Can a digital fly brain really play Doom?
Sort of. The connectome describes static wiring, not a living brain, so the demos simulate stimulation on top of that structure. No evidence points to consciousness, and no fly was harmed in these Doom sessions.
