Two Keys Now Summon Gemini Over Any App on Windows
All blog articles
Mac users got their app in April. Since September 10, Windows has its own native Gemini client, and it floats above every window you own.
Alt + Space, the new front door to Gemini on Windows
The whole pitch fits in two keys. Press Alt + Space and a Gemini overlay pops up over your spreadsheet, your code editor, even your game.
Press Alt + Space on your PC at any time to open Gemini over your active work.
Ask for a fact-check, tighten a paragraph, then jump straight back to work. The app is available worldwide on Windows 10 and 11, on both x64 and ARM64 machines.
Gmail, Drive and Nano Banana, no browser required
There is more here than a floating chat box. The app connects to Gmail, Drive, Docs and Calendar, so it can dig through email threads or summarize your files.
Supported accounts can hand multi-step research to Gemini Spark, Google's autonomous agent. Image creation runs on Nano Banana, video on Gemini Omni, straight from the desktop.
Gemini on Windows walks into Copilot's living room
Google now plays an away game on Microsoft turf. Copilot ships preinstalled on every Windows 11 PC, and OpenAI's ChatGPT desktop app has been around for ages.
So Google bets on muscle memory, a hotkey you hit a hundred times a day. The timing looks sharp too, since Microsoft still works on one super app for all its Copilots.
One caveat: Alt + Space already belonged to the Windows system menu and PowerToys Run. Gemini grabs it on install, though you can rebind it in settings.
Our take: distribution wins AI races, and Gemini already flirts with a billion users. A native foothold on the world's biggest PC platform may be Google's cheapest growth lever this year.
How do you download the Gemini app for Windows?
Go to gemini.google/desktop, grab the installer for Windows 10 or 11, then sign in with your Google account. Chats and memory sync with mobile and web.
Does Gemini for Windows replace Microsoft Copilot?
No, both can live on the same PC. Copilot stays built into Windows 11, while Gemini is a separate download tied to Google's ecosystem.
