Gemini Hits 950 Million Users, ChatGPT Slips Below 50%

950 million people now open the Gemini app every month. A year ago that number was roughly a third of that, and Google has never been this close to its own billion-user club.

Gemini's climb toward a billion users

During its Q2 2026 earnings call, Alphabet said Gemini's app reached 950 million monthly active users, up from 750 million in February and around 450 million a year earlier. CEO Sundar Pichai added that daily active users have tripled over the same span, crediting features like Daily Brief and the personalized Gemini Spark assistant.

That figure covers the app alone, separate from AI Mode inside Google Search, which has also passed one billion monthly users on its own. Google hasn't said how much the two audiences overlap, so stacking the numbers together would be misleading.

ChatGPT still leads, but the gap is shrinking

OpenAI crossed the symbolic billion-user mark back in May, according to Sensor Tower estimates, making ChatGPT the fastest app in history to hit that milestone. Yet the momentum has shifted a bit: ChatGPT's market share among AI assistants slipped below 50% for the first time, while Gemini's share climbed to nearly 28% in the first half of 2026.

Anthropic hasn't disclosed a total user count for Claude, focusing instead on paid subscription growth. Microsoft said back in October 2025 that its whole Copilot family, spanning consumer and workplace products, had crossed 150 million monthly active users, a very different kind of grouping than one standalone consumer chatbot.

The money is following the users

None of this growth happens in a vacuum: Google Cloud revenue jumped 82% to $24.8 billion this quarter, and Alphabet pushed quarterly capital spending to $44.9 billion to keep building AI data centers and chips. The company also claims nearly 90% of the Fortune 100 now use Gemini Enterprise, with more than nine million developers building on its models every month.
