Free ChatGPT Goes Unlimited, and Luna Takes the Default Seat

One billion people open ChatGPT every week, and plenty of them know the sting of a message cap mid-conversation. That wall falls now: OpenAI just announced unlimited text chats for Free and Go accounts.

The announcement landed on August 6, and it targets daily use head-on. Students, freelancers and casual users will no longer need to ration questions or juggle spare accounts.

Free ChatGPT goes unlimited: what actually changes

GPT-5.6 Luna replaces GPT-5.5 Instant as the default model for free tiers this week. Next week, OpenAI lifts the text message cap, with only anti-abuse guardrails left to block automated spam.

A new Think button completes the package. Hard question? One tap gives Luna extra time to reason before it answers.

Luna and Sol: the new pecking order at OpenAI

Luna is the lightweight member of the GPT-5.6 family, which shipped in July after a tense review in Washington. OpenAI claims 62% fewer factual errors than GPT-5.5 Instant, though that figure comes from an internal evaluation only.

Plus and Pro subscribers get a retuned GPT-5.6 Sol, more direct and less chatty, plus a slider to dial reasoning effort. The retune stays inside Chat: ChatGPT Work and Codex keep their current behavior.

Why OpenAI hands free ChatGPT users this much

One word: competition. ChatGPT just crossed one billion weekly users, but Gemini trails close behind with a free tier that never felt this stingy.

Our take: smart math. Casual users just lost their main reason to pay, yet the $20 Plus plan still guards Sol, file uploads and image tools.

"Unlimited" comes with fine print

Caps remain on file uploads, image generation, voice and other tools. Text alone flows free, on the $8 Go plan too.

One more nuance: no speed guarantee at peak hours. Unlimited covers the volume of text, not priority access to servers.

When do unlimited chats reach free ChatGPT?

GPT-5.6 Luna becomes the default this week, then unlimited text chats and the Think button arrive the week of August 10, 2026, for Free and Go accounts.

Is the Think button free on ChatGPT?

Yes. The button gives GPT-5.6 Luna more time to reason on complex questions at no extra cost, subject to OpenAI's anti-abuse guardrails.
