One prompt box now stands in for 29,000 federal websites, at least on paper. Since Tuesday, Americans can question their government the way they question ChatGPT. The country that perfected online paperwork wants to hide it behind a chat window.
America.gov, a federal front door built like a chatbot
Donald Trump signed an executive order on September 29 to make the site the official gateway to federal services. The page greets visitors with "Hello, America" and draws its answers from 29,000 official government websites, with links back to every source.
You'll now have one front door for every single question.
Passport renewals, Medicare comparisons, campsite reservations in national parks: you ask in plain English. Three areas stay off limits: taxes handled by the IRS, intelligence services and the Defense Department. Voice input and attachments work too, just like consumer chatbots.

The event at Washington's Mellon Auditorium looked more like a product reveal than a policy announcement. Newsweek threw fifteen politically sensitive questions at the bot and got sourced, factual answers every time.
Gemini and Grok speak for Washington
Behind the portal sits the National Design Studio, led by Airbnb cofounder Joe Gebbia, with the GSA in charge of operations. No in-house model here: Google confirmed Gemini powers part of the service, and Gebbia also named xAI's Grok.
Two private AI labs now serve as the federal government's official voice. Transparency stays thin, though: the site never names its engines, and a launch-day test even saw the bot introduce itself as Qwen, Alibaba's model. For a public service, that vagueness raises eyebrows.
America.gov wants to file your paperwork by 2027
The roadmap gets bolder: Medicare enrollment, passport applications, legal name changes, all inside the chat and tied to Login.gov. Those transactional features are slated for 2027, complete with status updates on each request. Trump claims Americans will get back 10 billion hours of paperwork every year.

Which AI models power America.gov?
Google confirmed that Gemini is part of the infrastructure, and design chief Joe Gebbia named xAI's Grok as well. The site itself does not officially disclose which models it runs.
