Grok Just Made Excel Formulas Free, Copilot Still Costs $30

Ever stared at a nested INDEX-MATCH formula for twenty minutes wondering where your career went wrong? xAI might just have ended that particular flavor of misery.

Elon Musk's AI company, now folded into SpaceX and rebranded SpaceXAI, has rolled out a free add-in that puts Grok directly inside Excel. The pitch is simple: describe what you want in plain English, skip the syntax nightmare.

What Grok for Excel actually does

The feature lets you ask questions about data, generate Excel formulas and perform scenario analysis directly within existing workbooks. No more copying ranges into ChatGPT and pasting the answer back.

The add-in also allows you highlight specific cell ranges and ask Grok conversational questions about data trends, anomalies, and underlying drivers, with responses referencing source cells. It can also access additional context through connectors to services including SharePoint, Google Drive and email.

Grok 4.5 does the heavy lifting, and it's free

The add-in runs on Grok 4.5, xAI's flagship large language model, which became publicly available on July 9, 2026. According to xAI, the model was built on the company's 1.5-trillion-parameter V9 architecture and trained on new datasets spanning science, engineering, and math, with real developer activity data incorporated through a partnership with Cursor.

Here's the part that actually stings for Microsoft: Copilot for Office runs $30 per user per month for enterprise customers, while all three Grok add-ins for Word, PowerPoint, and Excel are free for Microsoft 365 users. That's a bold move to plant a free flag inside a rival's own walled garden.

A staged rollout, now supercharged

xAI didn't ship everything at once. The rollout happened in stages: PowerPoint on June 16, Word on June 18, and Excel on June 22. What's new now is the jump to Grok 4.5, which noticeably beefs up the tool for financial modeling and multi-step analysis.

One catch for European users: Grok 4.5 is not yet available to EU users, though xAI has indicated availability is expected before the end of July 2026. Regulatory paperwork moves slower than product launches, apparently.

Why this matters

This drops into a broader fight over AI-powered productivity software, where every major tech company is racing to plant its own assistant inside daily workflows. Free beats a $30 monthly fee for a lot of small businesses and freelancers who never got a Copilot seat in the first place.

The bigger question is whether "free" survives contact with reality. xAI now sits inside SpaceX following a deal that valued it at $250 billion, so a paywall further down the line wouldn't be shocking once users are hooked.
