Meta's $349 Ray-Ban Audio Drops the Camera, Keeps the AI

Meta finally built smart glasses you could wear into a locker room without side-eye. The new Ray-Ban Meta Audio, unveiled at Connect 2026, keep Muse, music and calls, and ditch the camera entirely.

Ray-Ban Meta Audio: 43 g, 12 hours, zero lens

For $349, the frames pack open-ear speakers, a mic array, live translation and voice commands. Preorders are open now, with shipments from October 13. TechCrunch confirms these are Meta's first camera-free AI glasses.

Weight falls to 43 g, down from 49 g on Gen 2, with up to 12 hours of battery. Dolby Atmos support arrives as well. EssilorLuxottica offers two shapes, Clubmaster and Burbank, across 23 color and lens combos.

Why cut the camera? Read the room

Meta never framed this launch as damage control, yet the timeline speaks volumes. Its camera glasses earned an ugly nickname, and over 70 advocacy groups, the ACLU among them, demanded guardrails. The pitch instead leans on comfort, battery and a slimmer design.

A Dutch consumer group even called for an EU ban on camera glasses in early September. Remove the lens and bystanders can relax. The microphones stay, though, so the privacy debate gets narrower, not closed.

Where Ray-Ban Meta Audio fits in Meta's lineup

The camera-equipped Gen 3 costs $449, the Display model $799, and VR Glasses arrive in spring 2027 at $1,299. At $349, Audio is the cheapest door into Muse. The assistant already plays AI butler inside WhatsApp.

Mark Zuckerberg counts nearly 2 billion glasses wearers worldwide as his market. Every device shown at Connect now routes through Muse, live since September 8. Bloomberg also reports a hearing-aid mode across the lineup.

Smart buy or gutted glasses?

Honestly, the math checks out. Plenty of buyers want audio, translation and a voice assistant, minus suspicious glances at the gym. At $100 below the Gen 3, the price argument writes itself.
