Smart glasses that cannot take a single photo: that is reportedly one idea on Apple's table for its first pair. Yes, you read that right.

In his Power On newsletter, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman points to a reveal at WWDC 2027, then a launch late that year. Inside the company, privacy reportedly ranks as priority number one for the project, code-named N50.

The teams developing glasses within Apple's Vision hardware group and elsewhere in the company see privacy as priority No. 1.

Three camera paths for Apple's smart glasses

Path one keeps a standard camera behind strict new safeguards, with an indicator LED that shuts the sensor down if covered. Path two limits the camera to Siri and Apple Intelligence, with zero photo or video capture.

The third prototype would drop the camera entirely and keep audio, calls, and voice AI. Gurman still sees the restricted-camera version as the likeliest outcome. One more detail: no in-lens display for this first generation.

How not to become the next Meta

Why so much caution? Meta has sold more than seven million Ray-Ban pairs, yet the product faces a class action and repeated covert-capture complaints. Contractors in Kenya even reviewed intimate footage captured by the devices.

Apple's reported counter-move: on-device processing, no facial recognition, no human review of footage. The rumored price, between $200 and $500, aims straight at Ray-Ban Meta territory.

A risky bet, but a very Apple one

Honestly, a camera-free model sounds great in a keynote and tough at the checkout. First-person capture remains the feature buyers love most. The market moves fast in the meantime, from Samsung's eyewear push to Snap's $2,195 Specs.
