After a decade of development and more than $3 billion invested in AR research, Snap just opened preorders for its first consumer augmented reality glasses. The price: $2,195. The pitch: standalone glasses that overlay digital content on the real world, no phone or cables required.

What Snap's $2,195 Specs actually deliver

Evan Spiegel unveiled the Specs yesterday at AWE 2026 in Long Beach. They feature a proprietary LCoS display with a 51-degree field of view and 16 million colors. Two Qualcomm Snapdragon processors handle computer vision and AR experiences separately.

Weight lands between 132 and 136 grams depending on frame size, roughly 40% lighter than the 2024 developer version. Battery life hits four hours of mixed use, and the charging case adds four more cycles for up to 20 total hours.

AI moves off the screen and onto your face

The real story here is Snap OS 2.0. The glasses run on-device AI with deep integrations into OpenAI and Google Gemini, enabling real-time translation, spatial navigation, and voice recognition across 40+ languages. Spiegel's pitch was blunt: AI trapped in a chat box is not enough.

For developers, Snap unveiled agentic tools in Lens Studio that connect to Claude Code, Codex, and Cursor. Hundreds of Lenses are already built, and Snap's existing library of four million AR filters gives it an ecosystem head start that most competitors simply do not have.

Snap Specs vs. Meta Orion: who wins the AR race?

At $2,195, these glasses are clearly an early-adopter play. IDC analyst Jitesh Ubrani called it the worst time to launch a premium product, noting that Snap's core audience skews young and budget-conscious. Preorders are live at specs.com with a $200 refundable deposit, shipping this fall in the US, UK, and France.

Meta's consumer AR glasses, codenamed Artemis, are not expected until 2027. Apple has shown nothing concrete. That gives Snap a genuine first-mover advantage in the "true AR" category. Whether the Snapchat company can convert that lead into a real business at this price point remains the billion-dollar question. But credit where it's due: Snap shipped before the giants did.
