Unconscious and Alone? This Pixel Watch Calls 112 for You
All blog articlesA watch that dials emergency services while you lie unconscious? That is the headline trick of the Pixel Watch 5, unveiled on August 12.
Google calls it Breathing Emergency Detection. And in a rare twist, Europe gets it before the United States.
Breathing Emergency Detection, a smartwatch first
The concept fits in one sentence: the watch tracks your blood oxygen around the clock. On-device AI blends the heart rate sensor, accelerometer and barometer to spot severe, persistent drops in saturation.
Such crises can follow severe pneumonia, an accidental overdose or choking. Until now, Pixel Watches only measured oxygen at night, so permanent tracking changes the stakes completely.
How the Pixel Watch decides to call for help
The escalation runs in three steps: a strong vibration, a full-screen alert, then a loud sound with a 30-second countdown. You can cancel at any point.
If you stay silent, the watch automatically calls emergency services. An automated voice message briefs the operator and shares your exact location. Your emergency contacts get a heads-up too.
On-device AI built to avoid false calls
Everything runs locally on the watch, with no cloud round-trip. To rule out sleep apnea, the algorithm also confirms you have not been asleep for more than 30 minutes.
Google says cardiologists, anesthesiologists and emergency physicians helped validate the system. The balance is delicate: a missed emergency would be tragic, a flood of false 112 calls would be too.
Ten European countries on day one
The feature is live now on Pixel Watch 4 and 5 in France, Germany, the UK and seven more countries. The Watch 5 hits shelves August 20 from $399, while the Watch 4 gets a free update.
History suggests patience for Americans: Loss of Pulse Detection launched in Europe in 2024 and only cleared the FDA in March 2025. Meanwhile Apple, which grabs 90% of AI smartwatch shipments, has nothing comparable on the wrist. Frankly, this is the strongest health pitch in the category right now.
Which Pixel Watch models get Breathing Emergency Detection?
Pixel Watch 4 and Pixel Watch 5. The opt-in feature is live in ten European countries, among them the UK, France, Germany and Switzerland.
Can the Pixel Watch really call 112 by itself?
Yes. If the wearer ignores the vibration, the alert and the 30-second countdown, the LTE watch or paired phone places the call and shares the location.
