Microsoft Is Merging All Its Copilots Into One Super App This Quarter

Five Copilot flavors, four apps, zero clarity. On July 29, Satya Nadella said it out loud: everything folds into one Copilot super app this quarter. And this time the CEO said it himself, not an anonymous leak.

A Copilot super app to end the sprawl

The announcement landed during Microsoft's fiscal Q4 2026 earnings call. The plan: merge chat, code, collaboration and autonomous agents into a single application, for consumers and businesses alike.

Fortune had revealed the project back in May, under the internal slogan "Delivering one Copilot". Nadella's statement turns that scoop into official strategy. No firm date, no pricing, just "this quarter".

A year of prep behind the scenes

This project did not appear overnight. In March 2026, Microsoft merged its consumer and commercial Copilot teams under Jacob Andreou, a former Snap executive.

Wall Street liked the bigger picture: the stock jumped about 15% after results driven by cloud and AI. Investors love a good simplification story.

Chat, Code, Cowork and Autopilots in one super app

On the menu: the classic Copilot chatbot, code features from GitHub Copilot, and Cowork for multi-step workplace tasks. Autopilots complete the set, autonomous agents built for long missions without human supervision.

One number deserves attention: GitHub Copilot already claims 20 million users. Move that base into a mainstream app and adoption gets a serious head start. Developers keep their tool, Microsoft gets the traffic.

Why now? ChatGPT Work set the pace

The all-in-one race covers the whole industry. OpenAI already shipped ChatGPT Work, a bundle of ChatGPT and Codex, while Anthropic folded its agents straight into Claude.

Microsoft also has an adoption gap to close. Microsoft 365 Copilot just passed 30 million paid seats, out of roughly 450 million business customers. In other words, most corporate clients still do not pay for it.

The open questions

Nobody knows whether the new app replaces the current Copilot clients or lives beside them. The line between personal and work data stays blurry, as do licenses and agent controls.

Our take: the strategy holds up, especially against an omnipresent ChatGPT. Execution will decide everything, and Microsoft cannot afford yet another app.
