Claude Grew Its Own Browser, and It Fills the Web for You

Claude no longer needs to borrow your Chrome. Anthropic just built a full browser into its desktop app, right inside Cowork.

A built-in browser with nothing to install

Until now, letting Claude act on the web meant installing the Claude in Chrome extension. Functional, sure, but it always felt like a workaround.

The new browser is Chromium-based and lives inside the app. No setup, no extension, and your own tabs and logins stay out of reach unless you decide otherwise.

What this browser actually does for you

The use cases are refreshingly mundane: grabbing invoices from a vendor portal, pulling numbers off a dashboard, grinding through a form nobody wants to touch. The boring web, delegated.

Rollout starts this week for Pro, Max, and Team subscribers on macOS, Windows, and Linux in beta. Enterprise plans already have it, with admin controls attached.

Clean browser or your Chrome session?

The built-in browser runs a blank profile: no cookies, no active logins. An agent mistake cannot reach your connected accounts, which is a genuinely smart default.

For sites behind a login, the Chrome extension still makes sense and stays your default if installed. Anthropic is upfront that prompt injection risks remain, safeguards or not.

The super app race heats up

OpenAI recently dropped Atlas as a standalone browser and folded it into the ChatGPT desktop app instead. Anthropic lands on the same conclusion: one app for chat, files, and the web.

Microsoft is moving the same way by merging its Copilots into one super app. Our take: the browser, not the chatbot, is where 2026 gets decided.

How do I turn on Claude's built-in browser?

You don't have to. Once the rollout reaches you, the browser is on by default in the desktop app: give Cowork a web task and it opens on its own.

Can Claude's browser see my passwords?

No. It runs on a separate, clean profile with none of your cookies or sessions. Nothing from your personal browser is shared unless you opt for Claude in Chrome.
