Why Open Word? Claude Docs and Slides Now Live in the Chat

Anthropic just parked its tanks on Microsoft's lawn. Claude Cowork and chat merged into a single Claude today, and Claude Docs plus Claude Slides shipped alongside. Your next report may never touch Word.

Ask for a document and the work happens right there. Claude drafts sections, comments on editorial choices and revises the text while colleagues edit the same file. Every document starts private, then owners share it with a team or export it to Google Docs or Microsoft Word.

Presentations follow the same logic. You request a deck, adjust individual slides, present straight from Claude or download it as PowerPoint or PDF. All three tools, Design included, sit in beta on paid plans.

One Claude now picks the right tool for you

The deeper change hides behind the new toys. Chat and Cowork are now one product, and Claude alone decides if a task needs a quick answer or a long workflow. Only two modes remain: Claude and Claude Code.

Speed matters here. Cowork launched as a research preview on January 12, 2026, barely eight months ago, and it already grew its own browser along the way. A memory fusion shipped on August 25 quietly prepared this merger.

Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace, duly warned

Make no mistake, this is a frontal push into office software. Earlier Anthropic launches already triggered a selloff in software stocks. Docs and Slides now aim straight at Word and PowerPoint's turf.

Microsoft and Google still own distribution, with Copilot and Gemini baked into their suites. Claude counters with stamina: tasks continue in the cloud after you close your laptop. Word never learned that trick in forty years.

Claude plugs into its rivals

Here's the twist: connectors such as Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Slack, Canva and DocuSign stay available from any conversation. So Claude hooks into the very suites it now competes with. Awkward industry dinner ahead.

Who gets Claude Docs and Slides first?

The rollout starts on Pro and Max plans, across web, desktop and mobile, in the coming weeks. Team and Free tiers follow later, and Enterprise admins choose when to switch the tools on.

Can Claude Docs replace Microsoft Word today?

Not yet: the tools are in beta and exports still rely on Word, Google Docs, PowerPoint and PDF. For drafts, team edits and quick decks, though, Claude now covers the full loop.
