Meshcapade: markerless AI motion capture from Tübingen, now inside Epic Games

Updated on October 14, 2026

Meshcapade is an AI-powered markerless motion capture and 3D avatar platform built on the SMPL body model. A spin-off of the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Tübingen, Germany, the company was acquired by Epic Games in February 2026 for an undisclosed sum. All online platforms, including the Meshcapade Me editor and API, were shut down on April 18, 2026. The underlying technology now feeds into Epic's Unreal Engine and MetaHuman pipeline.

Pros
  • Full-body and finger capture from a single camera
  • FBX and GLB exports ready for game engines
  • SMPL body model, an academic and industry standard
  • Cloud, on-premises or hybrid deployment
  • GDPR-compliant and SOC 2 certified
Cons
  • Platform closed since April 2026
  • Consumer tool absorbed into Epic Games, no public replacement
  • No public pricing left since the shutdown

SMPL body model and how Meshcapade worked

Meshcapade was built on SMPL (Skinned Multi-Person Linear), a parametric 3D body model trained on thousands of real-world body scans at the Max Planck Institute. SMPL encodes human shape and motion into a compact set of parameters that any 3D engine can read, which made it a standard across research labs and AAA game studios alike.

Founded in 2018 by Naureen Mahmood and Talha Zaman alongside researcher Michael J. Black, the company raised $6 million in June 2023 in a round led by Matrix, joined by angel investors (including Nate Mitchell and Matthew Ball) and 3D clothing software maker CLO. Its flagship product, Meshcapade Me, turned ordinary video shot on a phone, webcam or professional camera into production-ready motion capture data, tracking body and fingers without any suit or markers.

Epic Games acquisition and platform shutdown

Epic Games announced the acquisition on February 18, 2026. The Meshcapade team joined Epic's AI Research division, and a new office opened in Tübingen inside the Cyber Valley hub. CTO Kim Libreri stated the goal was to make believable, expressive digital characters easier to produce in real time for gaming, film and virtual production.

On April 18, 2026, every Meshcapade online service went offline. SMPL licensing, however, remains managed by Max Planck Innovation and continues to be available to existing and new customers, according to Max Planck Innovation. The official site now shows a shutdown notice pointing visitors to the Unreal Engine website for Epic's digital-human work.

Alternatives for AI-based motion capture

With Meshcapade Me gone, indie studios and 3D animators looking for markerless motion capture tools still have options. DeepMotion provides freemium video-to-animation with Unity and Unreal export. Plask focuses on browser-based AI animation editing. Move AI targets professional productions with high-fidelity multi-person tracking.

Which one fits depends on your pipeline and budget. Whether Epic will eventually release part of this technology through MetaHuman in a publicly accessible form remains an open question.

Frequently asked questions

What happened to Meshcapade Me?

Meshcapade Me, the online avatar editor and motion capture tool at me.meshcapade.com, was shut down on April 18, 2026. Epic Games acquired the company in February 2026 and absorbed the team into its AI Research division. The official site now shows a shutdown notice pointing to the Unreal Engine website. No standalone version of the editor is available.

Did Epic Games buy Meshcapade?

Yes. Epic Games announced the acquisition of Meshcapade on February 18, 2026, for an undisclosed price. The deal brought Meshcapade's AI motion capture and SMPL-based avatar technology into Epic's portfolio. The team relocated to a new Epic office in Tübingen, Germany, inside the Cyber Valley research hub, and contributes to Unreal Engine and MetaHuman development.

How does AI motion capture work without a suit?

AI motion capture analyzes standard video frames using computer vision and machine learning to estimate joint positions in 3D space. Tools like DeepMotion, Plask and Move AI track body and sometimes finger movement from a single camera feed, then export the data as FBX or GLB files. Accuracy depends on lighting, camera angle and resolution, so a fixed camera with a clear background usually yields the best results.

What is the Meshcapade body visualizer (SMPL)?

SMPL stands for Skinned Multi-Person Linear model, a parametric 3D body representation developed at the Max Planck Institute. It encodes human shape and pose into a compact set of parameters, enabling realistic avatar generation from photos, measurements or scans. After the Epic acquisition, SMPL licensing is still handled by Max Planck Innovation, so studios and researchers retain full access to the model.

Verdict: Pioneering AI motion capture that went from a Max Planck lab to Epic Games in under a decade. Animators and studios that relied on Meshcapade Me should evaluate DeepMotion, Plask or Move AI while waiting to see how Epic integrates the technology into MetaHuman.
