Runway Gen-4.5: AI video where object weight and camera moves finally behave

Runway Gen-4.5 is Runway's frontier AI video generation model, built to produce high-definition clips from a text prompt or a starting image. Released in December 2025 under the codename David, it opened its run at the top of the Artificial Analysis arena with 1,247 Elo points, ahead of Veo 3 and Sora 2 Pro. Access sits behind Runway's paid plans, from $12 a month. Your prompts read like plain sentences, no film-school jargon required.

A camera you direct sentence by sentence, gravity included

Gen-4.5 executes sequenced instructions inside a single prompt, covering camera choreography, scene composition, event timing and atmospheric changes. The model handles both text-to-video and image-to-video, and outputs 5 or 10 second clips at 1080p.

You describe a slow tracking shot through a night market after the rain, and the puddles catch the neon while the crowd keeps moving. Motion carries weight and momentum, a clear break from the floaty look older video models were known for.

One thing to plan for, clips come out silent. Voices, music and sound effects get layered on afterwards, inside Runway's Studio or in regular AI video editing tools.

Gen-4.5, Runway's David-versus-Goliath episode

Roughly a hundred people worked at Runway when Gen-4.5 shipped, up against the headcounts of Google and OpenAI. The bet paid off, as the model topped the blind votes of the Video Arena at release, an Elo rating built from anonymous side-by-side video comparisons.

The race kept moving afterwards, with Kling 3.0, Seedance and Wan raising the arena's overall level. Runway answered in its own way, hosting those third-party models on its platform right next to Gen-4.5, with editing, upscaling and team features wrapped around them. (The company, founded in 2018 and valued at $3.55 billion, had already contributed effects work to Everything Everywhere All at Once, a decent calling card.)

Twelve credits per second, what Gen-4.5 really costs

Gen-4.5 burns 12 credits per generated second in the web app, so a five-second clip costs 60 credits. Every paid plan includes a monthly allotment, and Max, which replaced the old Unlimited tier, rolls unused credits into the next month.

On the developer side, the API bills $0.12 per generated second, with a balance kept apart from your web subscription. These numbers shift as models come and go, so Runway's official pricing page gets the final say.
