Gemini Spark runs your digital chores from Google's cloud, even with the laptop shut

Gemini Spark is Google's personal AI agent: you hand it a mission and it carries it out across Gmail, Docs, Calendar and Drive, under your direction. Everything runs on dedicated virtual machines in Google Cloud, so the work goes on after you close the laptop or lock your phone. Google unveiled it at its I/O conference, and access requires a paid plan, Google AI Pro at $19.99 a month in the US or Ultra elsewhere. Workspace regulars gain a background coworker that sorts, summarizes and drafts without being nudged.

Pros
  • Keeps working with your laptop closed
  • Native access to Gmail, Docs, Sheets and Calendar
  • Recurring schedules plus reusable taught skills
  • Asks for confirmation before sensitive actions
Cons
  • Locked behind paid Pro and Ultra plans
  • Pro-tier access limited to the US for now
  • Less capable outside Google's own services

Tasks, schedules and skills: the three levers inside Gemini Spark

Three building blocks drive the agent: one-off tasks, recurring schedules and skills you teach it once. In practice, you type “flag the hidden fees in my card statement every month” and Spark repeats the job on its own, no reminders required. Like other autonomous agents, it still waits for your sign-off before sensitive moves.

Under the hood, Google pairs its Gemini 3.5 model with the Antigravity agent harness. Spark talks to your apps through structured APIs rather than steering a screen pixel by pixel, which keeps its behavior predictable. A detail that raises a smile: the agent has its own Gmail address, so you can brief it like a coworker.

From freelance photographers to small businesses

Context is where Spark pulls ahead of ChatGPT Agent or Claude Cowork: it already sees your email, spreadsheets and calendar. A freelance photographer can delegate every incoming inquiry, with the client's name extracted, the tracking Sheet filled in and a Drive folder created right after.

Connections go beyond Workspace too, with Canva, OpenTable and Instacart on the list and MCP support lined up for more. That action-first logic separates it from classic AI life assistants, which wait for questions instead of doing the work.

One-off taskDraft a status update from your emails, Docs and Slides
Recurring scheduleComb through each monthly statement for hidden fees
Conditional triggerLog every incoming customer inquiry in a tracking Sheet

What Gemini Spark costs, and where to switch it on

Count on $19.99 a month with Google AI Pro in the US, or a Google AI Ultra plan billed at $100 to $200 monthly in other covered countries. Neither the free Gemini tier nor the $7.99 AI Plus plan includes it, and it is limited to adults over 18. Launched as an Ultra exclusive, the agent was later extended to the Pro tier. These figures get reshuffled often, so the Google subscription page has the current version.

Activation lives in a Spark tab added to the Gemini app menu on web and mobile. Everything stays opt-in: you decide which apps it may read and follow its progress as it works.

Frequently asked questions

Is Gemini Spark free?

No, there is no free tier for it. Spark requires Google AI Pro at $19.99 a month in the US, or Google AI Ultra elsewhere; the $7.99 AI Plus plan is left out as well. Google is widening access in stages, with no date announced for free accounts.

Gemini Spark or Claude Cowork, which should you pick?

Both agents apply for the same job from opposite sides. Spark lives in Google's cloud and shines across Gmail, Docs and Calendar, while Claude Cowork installs on your desktop and works on local files. The deciding factor is where your documents live; inside Workspace, Spark starts as the favorite.

Does Gemini Spark work outside the United States?

Outside the US, access goes through Google AI Ultra, which rolled out internationally with local language support. The $19.99 Pro tier remains US-only for now. A personal account is expected too: school accounts are excluded and only selected business accounts are covered at this stage.

Is Gemini Spark safe with personal data?

You stay in control at every step: the agent is opt-in, you choose which apps it may read, and it asks for approval before certain actions. The trade-off is real, though, since it has to read your inbox to be useful. Privacy-minded people will keep its connections to the essentials.

Verdict: A sorted inbox and a finished report waiting at sunrise, with no machine left running: that's the deal. People already living in Gmail, Calendar and Drive will get the most out of it, freelancers and small teams first.
