Google Pours $40 Billion Into Anthropic: When Your Biggest Rival Is Also Your Best Customer

Ten billion dollars in cash now, with thirty billion more on the table. On Friday April 24, Google committed up to $40 billion to Anthropic, turning what was already a significant partnership into the largest single AI investment deal ever announced by a hyperscaler.

Google bets $40 billion on Anthropic's compute hunger

Alphabet is wiring $10 billion immediately at a $350 billion valuation. The remaining $30 billion kicks in if Anthropic hits performance milestones. The deal includes five gigawatts of TPU and Google Cloud capacity set to come online by 2027.

The timing is no coincidence. Just days earlier, Amazon invested another $5 billion in Anthropic, with an option for $20 billion more. Two cloud titans are now in a bidding war to power the same startup.

Anthropic's staggering growth fuels investor frenzy

Anthropic's annualized revenue has surged past $30 billion, up from $9 billion at the end of 2025. Claude Code has become a must-have for developers, and 80% of the company's revenue comes from enterprise clients. Eight of the Fortune 10 are Claude customers.

In February, the company closed a $30 billion Series G at a $380 billion post-money valuation. VCs have since offered rounds at $800 billion or more, which Anthropic has so far declined. An IPO targeting October 2026 could raise over $60 billion.

Coopetition at its most extreme

Here's the delicious paradox: Google is funding a direct competitor to Gemini. But every dollar Anthropic raises gets partly spent on Google Cloud infrastructure. The capital is circular, and both sides benefit from the arrangement.

Meanwhile, OpenAI closed a $120 billion round at an $850 billion valuation in March. The AI race has shifted from algorithms to megawatts. Whoever controls the compute, controls the models. And right now, Anthropic is making sure it has friends on every side of that equation.
