DLSS 5, the AI That Redraws Your Games
Until now, DLSS was mostly a free-FPS machine built on upscale tech and frame generation. DLSS 5 changes the deal: its 3D-guided neural rendering generates lighting, materials, and skin detail on top of each frame. The AI no longer just enlarges the picture, it invents part of it.
Well, first of all, they're completely wrong.
Nvidia claims up to 370 FPS at 4K on an RTX 5090 and a 5X performance gain since March. One big catch remains: you need an RTX 50 Series card or GeForce NOW. Every older GPU sits this one out.
Why Gamers Want DLSS 5 Removed
Ever since the GTC reveal in March, the mockery has been relentless. Waxy faces, over-smoothed skin, "yassified" characters: Grace Ashcroft from Resident Evil Requiem became a worldwide meme. Nvidia had billed the tech as the "GPT moment for graphics."
Plenty of players call it AI slop injected into their favorite games. Developers fear a statistical average could flatten their artistic choices, pixel by pixel. Some even urge studios to shun the feature until Nvidia rethinks its approach.
The DLSS 5 Leak Made Things Worse
In late August, a DLSS 5 DLL leaked from an early-access build of NBA 2K27. Modders promptly grafted it onto Control. The result stung: 71 FPS down to 35 on an RTX 5070 Ti at 4K.
Fair caveat: that leaked build was neither final nor optimized. The official September 3 driver should do better. By how much is the real question.
Nvidia Holds the Line, Studios Will Decide
Huang defends what he calls "content-control generative AI": each studio tunes the effect to fit its art direction. You still have to admire the nerve of a feature customers beg to remove.
The true verdict comes Thursday, controller in hand. Journalists who saw recent demos describe far subtler results than the March screenshots. Resident Evil Requiem, Starfield, Hogwarts Legacy, and Assassin's Creed Shadows are next in line for support.
