Beijing's Robots Outran Bolt, Then Face-Planted Into Foam

8.64 seconds over 100 meters. On Wednesday in Beijing, the Tiangong Ultra robot ran almost a full second inside Usain Bolt's 9.58-second world record, untouched since 2009. The crowd cheered, then held its breath at the finish line.

Three robot records in five days

The second World Humanoid Robot Games wrapped up on August 26 at Beijing's Olympic speed-skating oval. More than 2,000 humanoid robots from 666 teams competed across 51 events. For scale, the winner of the first robot 100m in 2025 needed 21.50 seconds: the time was cut by more than half in one year.

Built by Beijing lab X-Humanoid, Tiangong Ultra clocked 9.39 seconds on day one, then 8.86 s, then 8.64 s in the final. It edged out Lightning, the sprinter from smartphone maker Honor. Another mark fell too: 2.88 m in the high jump from a standstill, far above Javier Sotomayor's 2.45 m.

Robot sprinters carried off on stretchers

The finish line remains a construction zone. Several runners, champion included, slammed straight into padded barriers, complete with sparks and fire extinguishers. Nearly every robot left the track on a stretcher.

That is the most honest benchmark of these games: sprint software now runs faster than the art of a clean stop. The Bolt comparison is symbolic anyway, set on a calibrated track without any of the constraints a human athlete faces.

Precision tasks, the real test for humanoid robots

The most telling action happened far from the track. In the hotel event, each team had 30 minutes to move luggage, restock a room and make the beds. In the restaurant challenge, robots had to set a microwave timer to five minutes or lose points.

A new dexterous-hand contest required robots to pick up beans with tweezers, weigh powder and connect flexible cables. Those fine motor skills, hungry for data, will decide real industrial value, and some labs even want your brainwaves as robot fuel. Stopwatches make the show; tweezers will make the market.
