Mozilla just handed Firefox's AI keys to a Paris lab. Not OpenAI, not Google: Mistral now powers Smart Window, the browser's built-in assistant.
And the symbolism runs deep: France becomes the first market outside North America, with the beta live today in official French. Not bad for a browser everyone keeps writing off.

Smart Window reads your tabs, now in French
The assistant taps your browsing context, but only when you allow it. It can recover a page you lost, group related tabs and flag duplicates. You can even quiz it across several tabs at once.
Visual previews of your history help you spot that half-remembered page. The partnership was made official on September 16, with the United Kingdom and Germany due before the end of the year.
Mistral Small 4 under the hood
The engine is Mistral Small 4: 119 billion parameters, with only 6.5 billion active per query. Translation: quick answers and a reasonable inference bill.
Crucially, this model is fine-tuned on regional languages, dialects and cultural context. The goal: replies that feel local rather than translated from default American English. Few US giants bother with that level of care.
A jab at Silicon Valley's AI funnels
While Chrome pushes Gemini and Edge pushes Copilot, Mozilla bets on model choice. Mistral is the recommended option in France, yet other AI models remain available, and everything can be switched off.
On data, conversations are not stored on Mozilla's servers by default, and Mistral agreed to zero retention. In ChatGPT Atlas or Perplexity's Comet, the AI sits at the center of the product from day one. The philosophical gap is hard to miss.
A consumer showcase for Mistral
The Paris lab usually sells to enterprises. Here it reaches millions of users with nothing to install, a distribution shortcut no funding round can buy. Arthur Mensch talks about sovereign AI in everyone's hands, and the phrase suddenly feels concrete.
Mozilla wins too: a European, open-source story that plays well in Brussels and with regulators. While Anthropic grew its own browser, Firefox prefers to stay the home of every model.

Smart Window is available in beta on Firefox for desktop, now with official French support. The feature is opt-in and activates from the browser's AI controls, sometimes after a waitlist.
