Google's UCP Buy Button Hits the Main SERP: Is Your Store Ready for Agentic Commerce?

On May 5, 2026, a Wayfair "Buy" button appeared inside standard Google Search results. Not in AI Mode. Not in Gemini. Right there on the main SERP, where billions of queries happen daily. Google's Universal Commerce Protocol just graduated from experiment to mainstream, and if your product data isn't airtight, you're already invisible.

Google UCP checkout lands on the main SERP

SEO researcher Brodie Clark first spotted the change, and Search Engine Land confirmed it. Shoppers with Google Pay can now complete a purchase without ever leaving the results page. The retailer stays the merchant of record, but Google owns the moment of transaction.

Wayfair is currently the only retailer live on this surface. Etsy and Target are expected next. Meanwhile, OpenAI quietly dropped its competing Instant Checkout plan, leaving Google as the sole player in agentic checkout at scale.

Why product structured data is now your storefront

Participation requires the native_commerce attribute in your Merchant Center feed, plus properly defined return policies, shipping settings, and customer support info. Incomplete fields mean your products simply won't trigger the Buy button.

On-site, your Product schema must include price, currency, availability, hasMerchantReturnPolicy, and OfferShippingDetails at minimum. AI agents cross-check your schema against your feed. Any mismatch, and you're flagged as unreliable.

How Semrush One keeps you UCP-ready

This is where Semrush One earns its keep. The Site Audit tool crawls every URL and flags missing or invalid structured data elements. You can spot pages lacking merchant return policy markup or incomplete Product schema before Google's agents do.

The On Page SEO Checker surfaces SERP feature opportunities, including Google Shopping integration, so you know exactly where structured data improvements will have the biggest payoff. Paired with Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit, you track visibility across Google's AI surfaces and traditional results in one place.

Agentic commerce is here: act now or lose shelf space

Zero-click search just became zero-click purchasing. Google is compressing discovery, comparison, and checkout into one results page. For merchants, the question isn't whether to care about UCP. The question is whether your data is clean enough to earn a seat at the table.
