Character AI is the largest platform for chatting with community-made AI characters, hosting millions of personas you can talk to by text or voice. A free account covers everything from group scenes to character building, while c.ai+ runs $9.99 a month and strips out ads and slow mode. One rule matters before signing up, open-ended chat has required an adult account since late 2025. The site opened its first public beta in 2022 and remains the reference in its category.
Every character is a card published by a community member, complete with a personality, a writing style and sometimes a voice. You pick a pirate captain, a language tutor or an anime hero, type an opening line, and the scene starts. By early 2024 the site was already drawing 3.5 million visitors a day.
The character builder asks for zero technical skill (though a genuinely good persona still takes an evening of tweaking). Group chats mix several characters into one thread, calls add real-time voice, and guided modes such as stories and video generation round things out on the web and the iOS and Android apps.
Since November 25, 2025, anyone under 18 can no longer hold open-ended conversations with the characters. The decision, announced on October 29, 2025, followed several US lawsuits involving teenagers, and an age assurance system now gates access. Teen accounts keep a set of supervised activities.
The company was founded in 2021 by two former Google engineers. In 2024, Google hired co-founder Noam Shazeer back and signed a non-exclusive license on the technology, a deal reported at around $2.7 billion, and Karandeep Anand now runs the business.
The free tier stays surprisingly broad, unlimited messaging included, but it comes with mid-chat ads, slow mode at peak hours and metered response rerolls. c.ai+ costs $9.99 a month, with a yearly option offered inside the app. These figures shift over time, so the official subscription page is the one to trust.
In the same arena, Talkie AI, Chai AI and Replika all compete on the ground of AI characters and companions, each with its own filters and vibe. The catalog and community of Character AI remain unmatched in sheer size, which is precisely why so many roleplayers stay put.

You can't, the legacy beta.character.ai site was permanently retired in 2024 and replaced by the current platform. Chats were migrated to the new site and the mobile app, with no way to switch back. Links to old character ai or beta character ai now point to removed pages.

Verdict: A fantasy scene at midnight or a mock job interview at noon, the sandbox is enormous for adult roleplay and writing fans. Parents get a clear line too, open chat starts at 18.
